3sun Group Successfully Secures Contract with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind

Specialist provider of products and services to the global energy industry, 3sun Group, has secured a contract with MHI Vestas Offshore for the electrical and mechanical completion of 73 V112-3.0MW turbines to be installed at the Humber Gateway Offshore Windfarm. 3sun Group, under its subsidiary Dawson Energy, last worked with Vestas in 2001 and has installed over 160 of their turbines for onshore wind farms, but has never worked with the turbine supplier on an offshore project.

The contract involves the company providing teams of technicians for the offshore mechanical and electrical completion of the V112-3.0MW wind turbines, and signifies MHI Vestas Offshore’s first project in the UK offshore market since the establishment of the joint venture company between Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The work off the coast of North East Yorkshire will take place from bases at Grimsby over a 14 week period.

Andrew Elmes, Renewables Director of 3sun Group said: “We are delighted to be able to work with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind again on their return to the UK offshore market and to win this contract.

“It is hoped that this project will help us forge an excellent relationship with MHI Vestas. We have over 13 years’ experience of offshore wind project work in the UK and abroad and we look forward to sharing this on the Humber Gateway project; using the professionalism and expertise of our technicians to support the MHI Vestas team.

3sun Group has helped build and maintain some of the most notable projects in the industry such as Griffin Forest, Greater Gabbard and London Array, currently the world’s largest offshore wind farm. The Group also has a contract to install a prototype model of the 7.0 MW Mitsubishi Sea Angel offshore turbine, at the SSE test site in Hunterston, which is expected to get underway this autumn.

Jens Tommerup, CEO of MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, said: “We are pleased to be working together with 3sun Group and we look forward to a smooth mechanical and electrical completion of the installed turbines for the Humber Gateway project,

Successful installation of the first Humber Gateway turbine was completed on 29 July, ahead of the initial schedule, and the project is due to be completed in spring 2015.

3sun Group prides itself on its personnel’s specialist skill, experience, training and competency standards, having worked on over 3,500 turbines to date, and boasting extensive knowledge of offshore wind turbines. The Group recently announced a new two year framework with Siemens to provide offshore wind turbine installation services in the UK until 2016, on work totalling around £15 million in the UK since their relationship with Siemens began in 2009. The renewables installation division is also currently supporting new offshore wind market entrant Areva on Borkum West II and Global Tech 1 wind farms in Germany. Also in German waters, 3sun Group technicians have mobilised to Baltic II for Siemens whilst already forming part of the team to build Dan Tysk and Meerwind offshore wind farms.

Following its six years of consistent and impressive growth, the Group recently received a £10million investment from Business Growth Fund, the bank-backed independent company established to help Britain’s growing businesses. The investment will enable 3sun Group to continue to expand its high quality service and products offering worldwide including opportunities to establish new overseas locations.

The Group employs more than 300 staff including 170 highly trained turbine technicians offshore and onshore. Headquartered in Great Yarmouth, England, it has a base in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and has seen recent expansion internationally following the creation of bases in Bergen, Norway and in Esbjerg, Denmark.
