Support Services Manager – joined November 2012

1. What attracted you to the company?
3sun Group were a growing company that I already had some awareness of (I worked with them as a sub-contractor a few years prior). The company had a fresh approach, a good attitude and I was told that they were willing to develop staff which appealed to me.

2. What have been your highlights so far?
Having involvement in the on-going shaping of the company has been one of my highlights, along with developing and growing my knowledge of the business. Using my experience to help others to progress and seeing their hard work and great attitude makes me proud to work with them. Also, being given the opportunity to organise events, such as The Dragon Boat Race and our 3sun Group Bake Off, is great because it raises money for charity and also gets everyone together socially.

3. What skills and experience have you gained during your time here?
Prior to joining 3sun Group my experience of the energy industry was mainly in Oil and Gas. Since being in the company, I have been able to expand my existing knowledge and gain experience in Renewables and other sectors. I have also been given the opportunity to attend various courses from first aid to management development programs.

4. Can you describe a typical day in your role?
Each day can be so different, they are far from quiet or dull though. A typical day in the office can include planning for our technicians, sorting out personal protective equipment, supporting others when we get challenging tasks, looking at systems and how we can make them more efficient or effective. I get a lot of interruptions in the day as I get involved with so many areas of the business that there’s always an answer or advice needed from someone. I work with a great group of people who will take on all sorts of all tasks and projects, this is key to being able to get things done. I am currently passing more knowledge and work on to some of my colleagues so I can have more time to develop the team and our systems, and support the field technicians we have. Some days this involves visits to vessels or sites where our personnel are based.

5. How would you describe the culture within 3sun Group?
When I first joined the company I remember thinking how nice everyone was, it really had a family feel to it. It was great to find that people’s work capabilities were great too; people work consciously and with a good attitude. After much expansion it still feels like this. It’s one big team and although different teams have their set objectives we all have one common goal to do a great job for our clients.

6. What advice would you provide to someone looking to develop a career within the industry?
Work on polishing any core skills, and then be prepared to work hard and have adaptability. This is not an industry that ticks along the same every day; we have to deal with issues that are beyond control that change our plans, everything from weather to client schedule changes. Things happen and we have to look for solutions and work effectively with the right attitude. Take opportunities to develop your skills and make it known what your goals are.

1. What was it that attracted you to the company?
The opportunity to grow and progress within a rapidly developing company. I joined 3sun Group in August 2012 as a Mechanical Maintenance Apprentice and later changed to a Design and Draughting Apprenticeship in January 2013 after gaining experience within the Engineering Department. I completed my apprenticeship in November 2013 and am now employed as a Design Engineer.
